Drug Description

Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside taking place in all cells of the body. It is an antiarrhythmic. It slows the electrical conduction in the heart, slows heart rate, or normalizing heart rhythm. The drug is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water and almost insoluble in alcohol. Adenosine injection is a hygienic solution for fast bolus intravenous injection. There are 3 mg Adenosine USP and 9 mg sodium chloride USP in Water for Injection USP in every mL. The pH of the solution is between 4.5 and 7.5.

Drug Indications

Adenosine Injection is used for the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia, a rhythm disturbance of the heart. This drug is also prescribed for other diseases not mentioned here.

Contraindications

Adenosine injection should not be used in hypersensitivity to this medication, second- or third-degree A-V block (excluding for patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker) and sinus node disease, such as sick sinus syndrome or symptomatic bradycardia (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker).

Dosage and Administration

Adenosine injection ought to be administered as a fast bolus by the peripheral intravenous course. Administer it either directly into a vein or, if given into an IV line, give it as close to the patient as possible followed by a rapid saline flush.
